Thank you for visiting my portfolio. I'm Liam, a Senior Network Engineer in Wales, UK, with expertise in IT, Networking, Linux, and System Platforms. In my day to day role I focus on designing, implementing, documenting, and maintaining Networking and IT solutions. From DHCP, DNS, Routing, Switching, Management Systems, and much more.

The following portfolio site is used to showcase some of the projects I have been working on in my day-to-day work life, details about who I am from both a personal and a work perspective, and also to hopefully help others on their journey.

IP Networking & Operations

As a Senior Network Engineer in a production service provider environment, I work heavily on the design, implementation, operation, and maintenance of all things Networking. Ask me about the fun of deploying a full Juniper aggregation network that stretches all the way from London Docklands to the glorious town of Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire.

I have strong knowledge and experience with common protocols such as BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, VLANS, DHCP, DNS, NTP, RADIUS, and more.

24/7 operations can be tough, but it is the most rewarding career to be able to receive a request, design a solution, and see that all the way through to implementation and operational maintenance is a beautiful thing.

Incident Management & On-Call

Let's be honest, things do break. It's how you respond to the incident and rectify the root cause. That is where true value lies.

My experience being part of a 24/7 on-call engineering and operations team has seen me respond to the most serious P0 outages in the early hours of the morning. Being able to identify the root cause, find a solution, and manage the communications to relevant stakeholders is a key factor in delivering a mature operation.

Not only have I been the engineer called out to investigate an issue, but I have also been the incident manager liaising with the relevant teams and coordinating the communications to get incidents resolved. My ITILv4 training has been invaluable for this.

Systems & Platform Engineering

Whilst my career has been heavily focused on IP networks, as a multi-skilled engineer. I have very strong knowledge on the design, deployment, maintenance and documentation of IT platforms.

I am a big advocate of using Open Source tools where and when you can. Whether that be for network management systems, data analytics, network source of truth or even automation platforms.

I have specific expertise with the tools such as Grafana, Netbox, LibreNMS, Uptime Kuma, Docker, Kubernetes and REST API.

Five years at a Welsh altnet, I’ve designed and supported on many many individual & team projects.

Projects

Deployed a full Juniper aggregation network providing service to +20,000 customers.

Designed, Deployed and Documented an Active DWDM line system at two key DC sites in South Wales.

Lead on the deployment of 22 PON sites across South Wales using Nokia 7360 ISAM platform.

Built KVM hypervisors on RHEL 10.0 for Nokia WS-NOC DWDM Management System

Designed an OOBM solution for active network cabinets to allow for remote management and performance analytics capture

Upgraded Juniper core networking, consisting of four core nodes to the Nokia SR7750 platform
